Description

Oldenzaal had lost a lot of footfall and shoppers to the larger cities in the region. In consultation with the city authorities, Foruminvest proposed the realisation of a high-grade shopping centre in the historical city district. The aim was respect current structures, so the entire city centre would benefit from the development. The new De Driehoek shopping centre is a seamless fit with the existing De Vijfhoek shopping centre and together with the local market now forms a new, lively pedestrian area in the shape of a so-called ‘shopping figure eight’. The development includes an underground parking garage, and a supermarket on the same level. The residential function of city centre has been retained in the form of 64 apartments built above the shopping centre. Shortly after the opening of the centre, the underground parking garage was awarded the title most customer friendly parking garage in the Netherlands. The commercial success of De Driehoek has improved the competitive position of Oldenzaal in the long term. In 2001, the shopping centre won the annual prize awarded by the Dutch Council of Shopping Centres (NRW). NRW Annual prize: First prize for best shopping centre in the Netherlands
